LONDON: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League supremo Nawaz Sharif’s wife, Begum Kulsoom, passed away on Tuesday.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shahbaz Sharif and her son, Hussain Nawaz, confirmed Kulsoom Nawaz death. The former first lady breathed her last at a clinic in London.

He wrote: My sister in law and Mian Nawaz Shareef’s Wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz is not with us anymore. May Allah forgive her. (To Allah we belong and To Him, we shall return)

Begum Kulsoom was under treatment at London’s Harley Street Clinic since June 2017.

She went on the ventilator for life support earlier today as her health deteriorated last night.

Sources at the clinic said she had developed a lungs problem again.

“She had been responding well without the ventilator until last night,” the sources said.

Begum Kulsoom was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August 2017.

The former first lady was born in 1950. She married former premier Nawaz Sharif in 1971.

In September 2017, Kulsoom Nawaz took part in NA 120 election against Dr Yasmin Rashid of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf. Before taking an oath, her health deteriorated due to throat cancer.

Shareefs shifted her to London for further treatment. During the dates of 2018 general elections, many news circulated about Kulsoom Nawaz death.

But Hussain Nawaz denied all rumours. He expressed his sorrow on the carelessness of the media without taking care of the family’s sentiments.

Her husband and daughter, Maryam Nawaz, are currently serving a jail sentence at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Wajahat Khan spoke for Prime Minister Imran Khan and wrote in a tweet.

‘From PM Office (happening now, as I’m here): has expressed great sorrow at Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s death. He was told about her demise while chairing a meeting on Local Govt, just moments ago. He promised legally-bound facilitation by the gov for the Sharifs.’
